Stargazers will have the chance to catch a glimpse of the annual this weekend – but light from a full moon on the night is set to interfere with the celestial spectacle.
We also get a lovely firework display too, an organised out over the water one for Cowes Week, Friday Evening at (9-9.30ish)
The shower can be observed on the night of Friday 12 August and into the early hours of Saturday 13 August.
Ideally, the best time to watch it is during the hours before dawn on Saturday when the full moon is relatively low,when light from the full moon doesn’t obscure the spectacle as much, and the meteor rate peaks, according to NASA.

Haunted Hotels for the Brave or Bold

Daphne du Maurier's The Jamaica Inn, Cornwall
A Cosy coaching house on Bodmin Moor with cobbled courtyard, beamed ceilings, roaring log fires and real ales, immortalised in Daphne du Maurier's novel.
Who Haunts there? The most famous and oldest is a man who sits on the wall outside, believed to be the ghost of the stranger who was lured outside while drinking in the bar in the 1800's. His body was found on the moor the next day, but his killer was not.

The Holt Hotel, Near Steepleaston, Oxfordshire
Beautiful traditional coaching inn dating back to the 15th century, with ultra modern facilities.
The ghost of legendary highwayman Claude du Vall, who often spent his ill-gotten gains from the road at the inn before he was executed in 1670. Guests often heard heavy footsteps walk the corridors and rooms of the hotel, while female guests have regularly report the feeling of being watched, mainly in Room 3.

Chillingham Castle, Alnwick, Northumberland, England
Famous for its moaning and whimpering Blue Boy. His bones and some scraps of blue clothing were discovered behind a wall where his cries have been heard, suggesting he may have been immured there. In the meantime, the rustle of a dress on the turret stairs heralds the passage of the restless spirit of Lady Mary Berkeley as she searches in vain for her husband (he ran off with her sister). Then of course there's the white lady in the pantry, the voices in the chapel etc.

Ghosts from the grave ... Pluckley in Kent is 'England's most haunted village'. Pluckley may look familiar as the setting for The Darling Buds of May but, according to the Guinness Book of Records, it's also England's most haunted village. Mediaeval Elvey Farm is slap bang in the middle of it and boasts beautiful bedrooms with ancient rafters and, if you're lucky, a "weeping wanderer". In the vicinity you might also encounter the unhappy wraiths of a schoolmaster, a soldier, a highwayman, a screaming man, a miller, Red Lady Derring, a white dog and many others besides.

Maes-y-Neuadd Talsarnau, Gwynedd, Wales
Not all apparitions aim to frighten, of cours,this 14th-century granite manor house is home to a ghost who is really quite friendly. Maes-y-Neuadd's Morfa Suite is the scene of many sightings of a woman thought to have been a children's nursemaid. Rather than being terrified, guests claim they became very calm in her presence and found themselves drifting pleasantly off to sleep. If you don't receive a visitation, you can at least console yourself the next morning with the hotel's eye-easing views of Snowdonia

Pirates of The Caribbean IV

Children at the Meridian Primary School in Greenwich were given a special treat this week, when movie heart throb Johnny Depp turned up.
The star who is filming in London on the forth in the series of Pirates of The Caibbean, Strange waters, responded to a letter from pupil Beatrice Delap and entered the school in his Captain Jack Sparrow costume, all the children of course were delighted, and who can blame them.

Johnny loves to surprise and delight the children, he made a secret visit to Great Ormond Street Hospital in January 2008, donating £1 million as a thank you for saving his daughter's life, his daughter Lily-Rose was treated there for kidney failure. He revisited the wards at a later date and told bedtime stories to sick children while dressed as Captain Sparrow.

Hell Bender

1 measure of Gin

3/4 msr of Cherry Vodka

1/2 measure of Sloe Gin

2/3 measure Passion fruit juice

1 teaspoon of Caster Sugar

3 ,1/2 msr Lemonade

Shake and strain into an ice filled glass,then top up with lemonade

Abracadabra

1, 1/2 msr of White Rum

1 ,1/2 msr madarin or orange juice

1, 1/2 msr grapefruit juice

1/2 to 1 tsp caster sugar (fine sugar)

Shake and strain into an ice filled glass

This one below is my own favourite concoction, quite sweet 3 or 4 and you should feel Happy

Noo's Black Ice

2 msr white Vodka

1 msr Tia Maria

4 msr Cocoa Cola

Poured over 2 cubes of ice

and a non spirits cocktail...
a Cinderella.
2 msrs Orange Juice

2 msrs Pineapple juice,

1 msr Lemonjuice

1/2msr lemon syrup

Shooting Stars in The UK Tonight

Shooting stars are set to provide a dazzling display of celestial fireworks across the UK on Thursday night.
Experts said the annual Perseid meteor shower, which occurs each August, would be one of the most spectacular in recent years.
Conditions for watching the meteors were likely to be near perfect, with dark moonless nights and clear skies over much of the country.
Every August, the Earth ploughs through a swarm of dusty particles shed by passing comet Swift-Tuttle.
As the particles, each no bigger than a grain of sand, hit the atmosphere at 135,000mph they burn up, producing trails of light that shoot across the sky.
This year, the Perseid shower will peak at around 11pm, when observers in the countryside may be able to see meteors streaking overhead at a rate of one almost every half a second.
Even in light-polluted cities, where only the brightest meteors would be visible, as many as 10 an hour may be seen.
The meteor shower was expected to continue through the night, with activity still strong in the early hours of Friday.
Robin Scagell, vice president of the Society for Popular Astronomy, said: "The best time to see the Perseid display is after about 10.30pm on Thursday evening. You can look anywhere in the sky. Though the meteors come from the direction of the stars of Perseus in the eastern part of the sky, they can appear anywhere."

Ok Here is the next bit, They are made from Eberhard-Faber White paper mixture, which is lovely to use, air dries and can be added to, at any time, helping with the modelling process, well it does suit my funny ways, anyway.:)
I drilled holes for eyes, set and modelled round them, & drilled holes for the wooden handles.

I modelled these three before my trip into hospital, they are at the first stage of becoming batons. They are the Unicorn, from the Unicorn and Lion fighting, The White Rabbit, and The Cheshire Cat, Next step is find appropriate eyes to set and drill holes for them and the wooden wand handle.

Ghost Island

As well as many other names such as the Garden Isle, and Dinosaur Island, one of the best loved nicknames is Ghost Island, as we seem to have more than our fair share.
Just why there are so many ghosts on the Isle of Wight is a mystery. Some say it's because of powerful unseen energy or ley lines which run under the Island.
This small island is home to hundreds of ghosts and spooky happenings. It has everything - from phantom monks, grey ladies and poltergeists - to the shades of smugglers, soldiers, Royalty and Romans. There are ghostly murderers and their victims, ghost-ships out at sea, and even a ghost-train still running on long vanished rails.
With the Island’s rich historical heritage, its violent and colourful past, it’s not surprising that ghostly goings-on and haunting echoes of those turbulent times continue to reverberate through 21st century, with the spirits of smugglers and shipwrecked seamen walking still on lonely West Wight beaches.
The Most Haunted team including Derek Accorah, Yvette Fielding and Richard Felix paid a visit to Ghost Island last year to film two programmes of Most Haunted, and their amazing experiences at Arreton Manor and Appuldurcombe House can be seen on Living TV’s new fifth series.

HARE AND HOUNDS
Arreton Murderous woodcutter Morey who was deemed to have killed his young grandson in cold blood in 1737, was tried and hanged, and his corpse left rotting on the gibbet at Gallows Hill, near the Hare and Hounds, until it became ´an offence to eye and nostril´. The gibbet crossbeam, complete with a notch cut in it beside the date of his execution can be seen in the pub. Morey´s restless spirit can also be seen, roaming Gallows Hill, carrying a large axe...

APPULDURCOMBE HOUSE, Wroxall . This handsome haunted mansion with its 365 windows and 52 rooms is now a shell of its former self. The ghosts however, remain. They include a phantom carriage, brown-clad monks, dark shapes glimpsed flitting through the grounds. Unseen hands regularly leaf through pages of the visitors' book.

THE PUB THAT VANISHED
You may never find this one, but have fun trying! One dark November night, two Island men set out from Newtown, on what became the strangest night of their lives. They came upon a pub - the Falcon or the Vulcan - where they shared a drink with some unsociable spirits. The drab bar felt unwelcoming and cold. Hostile eyes turned towards the two strangers and all conversation ceased. They drank up quickly and left. The strange old-fashioned pub, which was along a narrow lane somewhere between Newtown and Calbourne, has never been seen again. Despite repeated attempts, neither the lane nor ghostly pub has ever been found.

Journalist and local author Gay Baldwin has been investigating and researching ghost stories for over thirty years. Her series of Isle of Wight ghost books, video, DVD, audiobooks, you can order on-line at www.ghostisland.com.
In 1993, Gay devised the popular Newport Ghost Walk - a spooky stroll around the old town with a supernatural slant, which has introduced thousands of Islanders and visitors to the darker side of Newport.
Led by professional storytellers in Victorian costume from the Isle of Wight Ghost Experience, the walks leave St Thomas's Square, outside the haunted Wheatsheaf Hotel at 8pm on Wednesday nights. There's a new route every year and you can buy tickets on the night or book in advance at any of the Island´s Tourist Information Centres for the walks, which take approximately 1.5 hours.
You can also try several other walks throughout the year, such as the Botanic Garden in Ventnor, Cowes Old Town, Ghosts of Godshill, St Catherines Lighthouse in Niton (including supper), Arreton Manor Grounds and Freshwater Bay. was always a favourite, played in a darkened room, sometimes only lit by individual players candles. There are a few variations including one version named 'vampire',

Apple Bobbing;
Apples were such a powerful symbol in ancient times that the paradise of Celtic mythology, Avalon, literally means Apple-land. The apple is linked with both the Celtic festivals that gave rise to Halloween celebrations and the Roman goddess Pomona, who became associated with Halloween later on.
To bob for apples requires only a large tub or bucket filled with water and plenty of apples. During the Victorian era, it was believed that the first to catch an apple in her teeth would be the first to marry, or that after she snagged an apple, the first name spoken in her presence would be that of her future spouse. Sometimes Victorian hosts would insert charms into the apples, each predicting a different fortune. For example, capturing an apple with a coin in it would mean future wealth. A creative host could come up with many different types of fortune telling charms

Carving pumpkins..
Jack-O’-Lanterns may have been named for the story of a sinful man named Jack who managed to trap Satan in a tree and refused to set him free unless he promised to spare Jack from an eternity in hell. Unable to enter heaven or hell, Jack was given a hellfire ember to place inside either a carrot or turnip so that he could find his way around earth’s dark places. Later, pumpkins were used to make these lanterns, as their size made them more suited to carrying a flame

Snuff out the candle..
Bewarned not without an element of risk of catching your trousers or other apparel on fire, so hitch loose clothing out of the way before playing this game, it is totally hilarious though..
Tie a large spoon on a piece of string long enough to reach to lower calf level on each participant, tie the rest around their waist. The spoon is now dangling between their legs from the string entending from the handle. The spoon must be hanging down from the back of the player. The player now has to position themselves over a lighted candle and scoop down over it and snuff out the candle with the dangling spoon face. Failure to snuff it out, in say 2 minutes, will of course result in a one of a selection of appropriate silly forfeits.
Its not as easy as it seems..:)

Tell Ghost Stories or go Ghost Hunting...
Here is one of many of our local ones concerning the manor of Knighton.
Knighton is a hamlet near to Sandown on the Isle of Wight.
It is usually pronounced as Kay-nighton by local people, to avoid confusion with the larger, village of Niton, near Ventnor.
Knighton Gorges
Knighton manor house used to be the grandest manor house on the Isle of Wight. Sir Hugh de Morville fled to the house after killing Thomas Becket of Canterbury. The house was owned by the de Morvilles until 1256 when Ralf de Gorges which is where the name Knighton Gorges comes from.
All that is now left of the house is the two stone gateposts. The house was demolished in 1821 by George Maurice Bisset in order to prevent his daughter inheriting it after she had married a clergyman without Bisset's consent.
Knighton Gorges is a cornerstone of many unearthly tales, as the house has long been said to reappear at times in ghostly form, Lit up in all its former glory once a year on New Years Eve and entertaining a party in full swing, which to the unsuspecting observer seems like a period fancydress. Locals have also reported seeing animal-like gargoyles on top of each gatepost; these figures, if ever they existed, were removed many years ago and all that is left is plain stone.
The area is haunted by various ghosts and is a must stop for ghost hunters. One such tale is that of Sir Tristram Dillington, who is thought to have committed suicide after taking to gambling heavily after tragedy struck with smallpox killing his children and the death of his wife. His valet is said to have concealed the nature of his death by placing his corpse upon his horse, Thunderbolt, and driving it into the lake, ensuring that the property was not forfeited. The story is that the ghost of Sir Tristram rides a ghostly horse each year on the anniversary of his death, which occurred on 7 July 1721

I was given the opportunity to view some of an elderly friends postcard collection, along with many local vintage views were some charming Whitney little witches, and Halloween fancy dress, these were beyond cleanups, so I decided to redraw them trying to keep to the original style as much as possible. After going through the Kate Geenaway style redraws, which is much similiar to what I would probably do, I think I managed to 'get it' right. They are bit different, but hopefully not too much. Two more Ravens witch wands , or Batons. I found this vintage emphemera reference after I had made all the batons I thought you might like to see, and in the text greeting it says.....

Well I finially finished the works in Progress you had a sneak preview of a few weeks ago, and here they are. ( UPDATE: They are now all on offer in Etsy shops, Artwolf, and Pyewacketts).

Summer Solstice

The sun broke at 4.58am this morning to herald in the Longest Day, and Summer Solstice, in England.

Solstice, the name is derived from the Latin sol (sun) and sistere (to stand still), because at the solstices, the Sun stands still in declination; that is, its apparent movement north or south comes to a standstill.

In the Irish calendar, Midsummer is one of the four Irish Quarter days that divide the official calendar, and the evening before (St. John's Eve) is called Bonfire Night. Many towns and cities have 'Midsummer Carnivals' with fairs, concerts and fireworks either on or on the weekend nearest to Midsummer.

In Jersey most of the former midsummer customs are largely ignored nowadays. The custom known as Les cones d'la Saint Jean was observed as late as the 1970s - horns or conch shells were blown. Ringing the bachin (a large brass preserving pan) at midsummer to frighten away evil spirits survived as a custom on some farms until the 1940s and has been revived as a folk performance in the 21st century. This tradition is called in Jerriais faithe braithe les peiles.
A large fair in the parish of St. John was suppressed by an Act of the States of Jersey in 1797 following large scale disorder.

A custom which survived longer, until the First World War, was that of making milk-a-punch: young people would rise early and steal milk from cows in the field and eggs from the chicken-run (sometimes with the connivance of the farmer turning a blind eye) and make a warm flip-type drink.

Here is a picture of our very own Pyewackett, who seems to have adopted our Garden over the last few weeks. He is very Shy, and very fastidious, He tore small pieces of bread apart before dipping them into the water of one of the bowls I have dotted about for the birds to drink from.

After an awful morning, it was such a treat to receive another lovely gift in the mail.

They really seem to be arriving by pre ordained destiny post. (Bad day--Gift appears as is by Magic)

This ones a miniature Witches Wardrobe, crafted by Julie Ferioli; complete with a starter kit to start to fill the shelves up, of a potions bottle, and a miniature flowerpot containing a skull & poison vial. I love miniatures, always have since I was a child. Thank you so much Julie.

I thought you might like to see some vintage Photographs this first is one is of my Grandmother, her Christian names, Irene Violet, May.

I had changed the colour in the picture to use in a scrapbook page. Violets were a favourite flower of hers. I can remember it was particularly hard to find wild violets in the spring woods, I would usually have to cycle a few miles to Brocks Copse to pick some for her.
